Dylan exudes irresistible confidence and brilliance and is marked for an impressive political future. However, his internal struggle with identity and career decisions poses a significant hurdle in committing to their love affair.
Here’s a fun fact about me. Although it isn’t exactly a well-kept secret. Anyone who’s taken a deep dive into my social media could probably piece it together. My current book series is set in Chicago, a city celebrated for its vibrant food scene. And when it comes to my books, food plays a significant role in setting the stage and adding a dash of flavor to the story (pun intended).
In Willful Parties, food makes plenty of appearances, particularly Chicago hot dogs. If you’ve ever had a Chicago-style hot dog, you know it’s not your average frankfurter. A true Chicago dog is a masterpiece: an all-beef frank served on a poppy seed bun and topped with a parade of ingredients, including yellow mustard, neon-green sweet pickle relish, chopped white onion, fresh tomato slices, a dill pickle spear, pickled sport peppers, and a sprinkle of celery salt. One thing you’ll never find on it? Ketchup. The sheer size of it is a challenge to wrap your mouth around one.
Here’s where the confession comes in: I’ve never actually eaten a Chicago-style hot dog. I’m gluten free, and I don’t eat hot dogs. But hey, that’s the beauty of fiction, right? If fantasy authors can write about slaying dragons, then a romance writer like me can certainly describe the tangy, savory goodness of a food I’ve never tasted.
That said, I haven’t missed out entirely on Chicago’s culinary delights. Back in my pre-gluten-free days, I indulged in Chicago pizza from some of the city’s top pizzerias—Lou Malnati’s is an all-time favorite in my household. Even now, I make sure to order a Lou’s deep-dish pizza whenever I visit. Fun fact within a fun fact: I’m planning to ship in some of Lou’s famous pies for my next book release party!
Why all this focus on food in my writing? I come from a family of foodies, so it’s in my DNA. Plus, food is universal—it connects people, defines cultures, and anchors us in a sense of place. For me, it’s the perfect ingredient to bring my stories to life.
