Coming from a long line of famous witches, I should be at the top of the heap. Problem is, if there is a spell cast anywhere in my vicinity, I will somehow mess it up. As a probationary agent with the Arcane Bureau of Investigation, I have two choices: I can limp along and maybe pass myself off as a competent agent, or I can fail. Miserably.
Worse news? If I can’t get my act together, I may not only be out of a job, I could also lose my life.
Whose idea was this again?
“Less do another shot.”
It was official. I was in Hell.
Staring at the redhead slamming back another shot of tequila, I contemplated exactly what I’d done in my past lives to warrant this punishment. Being stuck watching this walking fantasy of a woman swallow down the amber liquid was the highest form of torture. She was stunning—with legs I could see wrapped around my body, hair designed to be twisted around my fist.
And those eyes?
It was harder not to stare at her than it would be to simply take her. Not that I knew what I’d do with her once I had her. She was trouble, with every single letter capitalized and underlined.
Wren Bannister was the definition of a hot mess, and I’d never even spoken to her. Everyone in the arcane world knew about the black sheep of the Bannister family. The one who’d been responsible for more than her fair share of catastrophes.
Fucking with that witch would only destroy me.
Yet, the second I pulled her from the flames of that damned apothecary, her wretched curse became mine. Her touch, her scent, they burned their way through my very being until there was nothing left but the ashes of where my soul used to be.
But she wasn’t my mate. No.
When a wolf found their mate, it was a link between two souls—one that could never be broken. Not even by death.
What she did to me—what her touch did to me—was the darkest of magics. It was lust and obsession and desire and a near-mindless need to keep her safe. It was her jasmine and honey perfume in my nose, and imagining what her gasp sounded like, and… I shook my head, trying to clear it.
There had to be a way to break her spell—had to be.
How was I supposed to find my true mate with her scent in my nose? How was I supposed to come into my full power as an Acosta Alpha if I was stuck being a spelled lapdog to an absolute train wreck of a witch?
With only a week until my thirtieth birthday, I had to get her out of my head. If I didn’t… I didn’t even want to think about what would happen if I was still obsessed with her by then. She had to have spelled me.
Right?
A week ago, I was the perpetual screw up of the Bannister coven and a probationary agent for the Arcane Bureau of Investigation. Somehow, I’ve managed to get myself mated to an Acosta Alpha, pissed off my family, and gotten on the radar of a dark Fae.
As much as I’d like to bury my head in the sand, I have a badge to secure—and with a new case on my proverbial desk—a job to do. Because I’m not the first witch that the Fae has tried to steal, but I will definitely be the last.
Just as soon as I get this curse under control…
