When his family and most of their kind were destroyed by the Guild, Derek inherited the position of Vampire Lord. Alchemists held the keys to creating portals to other worlds, knowledge they passed down to phoenixes. Their utopian society was crushed when the Guild invaded, intending to unlock the powerful secrets phoenixes possess. Lovers Derek and Avani met the night their city was sacked and after the city succumbed, they were lost to each other.
Love will be resurrected in blood and fire…
Having lost her memory, Avani became a protΓ©gΓ© of the Guild Master, conditioned by magic to believe shifters and vampires were evil. Eventually, she was made Seeker, tasked with finding the Vampire Lord in order to gain access to phoenixes.
When Derek finds Avani, he neutralizes the magic that's kept her from remembering who she is. However, the Templars have almost certainly made a pact with the enemy of all supernatural creatures, in order to gain access to the portals. Only a phoenix can save the world from utter ruin now, but that was precisely the asking price…
When I got the idea for this book, I didn't know that I would make it part of the Worlds of Fire series. I just had an idea about a woman who hunts vampires who ends up captured by the Vampire Lord. Of course, a story like that could go in many directions and this story was no exception. The story went from two enemies who find themselves attracted to two enemies who weren't really enemies. Instead, they were actually separated lovers. Whew!
I've never written about vampires before. I have written about lion shifters, gargoyle shifters and even faun shifters – but no vampires. Though I do like vampire movies, I didn't want to have a hero who was actually an anti-hero. Nothing wrong with that because they can be very intriguing. But in this story – the vampires needed to be involved in the heroine's mission. So, I came up with a culture where the vampires and their hosts have a symbiotic relationship. Once I figured that out, I knew how to move forward with the hero and heroine coming together to fight their common enemy.
In the middle of writing this book, I worked on a novella, Metamorphosis, for a science fiction romance anthology called, Pets in Space 6 (which is available until Feb 2022). I'd expected Blood Red Moon to be published first but it's going to be published second. Metamorphosis mentions a few things that show up in Blood Red Moon, though it's set on a different world.
However, I added "easter eggs" in that novella that relate to events in Blood Red Moon. There are connections between the stories, but you'll have to read them both to find all the easter eggs.
One thing that figures prominently between both books are the Books of Fire. They are texts that are important to the portals that connect the worlds. Those books also connect the main characters in both stories. I didn't plan it that way, but that's what happens when you end up working on two stories at once. Metamorphosis will be expanded and released as a separate book next spring. So perhaps I can add more easter eggs to the expanded novella.
When I stared writing Blood Red Moon I never knew that I would be starting a series. You never know how things will work out when you begin a story!
His hand outstretched. He mouthed one word. "Come."
I did.
Upstairs in his bedroom, we held each other for a long time. Listening to the party going on downstairs and to the festivities in the street. Holding each other as we enjoyed the comfort of each other. Now I wondered how I'd gone so long without it. But it's hard to miss what you don't remember, that is until it's found.
"I want you here with me. With us. But it has to be your choice," he whispered.
"You put me in that apartment to give me time to get comfortable. Is that the only reason?"
Silence, then finally he answered. "Yes. And because I was afraid."
"Of me?"
"Of what I felt. You weren't…you aren't ready for us to be all that we were to each other. But I still want you. Badly."
That much was obvious and always had been. "I need more time, Derek. There's still something between us. I feel it here." I touched my heart. "I'm sorry."
He sighed. "I know. You'll have to shed all the magic from him first."
I didn't have to ask who him was. We both knew without saying his name. Even without being here he was still between us, which I'm sure had been his intent.
"I just want you to know. You are welcome here."
Vampires had to be invited in. So did hosts. I was invited. I was welcomed. And yet, something nagged at me. The flashback. The Guild Master's words and his transformation. I wanted to tell Derek about it. And I planned to. Afterwards.

Deleteim sure you have so many ideas inside your brain, what makes you decide a story needs to be told?
ReplyDeleteThat's a great question! Usually I start writing down the scenes that come to me. Then I may put it aside or continue. Often I find there's an idea there that would work as a book or maybe a short story. But there are ideas that I've set aside and haven't returned to. They seemed great at the time, but later not so much!
