No one knows that better than Carson, Matt and Nathalie. Through trials, and hardships, unwavering love and devotion, they’ve built a solid family unit. But Matt longs for a reunion with his estranged family.
A family in need.
In spite of the pain his sister put him through, Matt agrees to help his sister with a potentially ugly custody battle. Meanwhile Carson struggles to keep both Matt and Nathalie safe from Black Hemlock and anew more potential dangerous foe.
With every family there are secrets and hidden truths and buried lies. And lies, even those of omission, can destroy.

Whatever warmth the day had left with the sun. Night brought near zero temperatures, but no snow. Old stone buildings loomed against the darkness, and lights spilled on the pavement before, heralding its occupants warm and snug within.
“This is cold for no reason at all,” Matt groused, zipping his coat against the biting wind.
“You’re just mad cause we have to walk through this deserted street like a scene from a bad 90’s slasher flick,” Nathalie pointed out.
“My side aches from all this cold,” he added.
She paused mid-step. “Are you serious?”
“The cold makes my whole body shiver.”
She studied him for a long moment before she resumed walking. Their footsteps echoed and crunched on the frozen cement.
A few short months before, Matt had been shot and poisoned by a jealous ex-lover of Carson’s. The lover, one Drexel Peters, thought he could reclaim his status by taking Matt and exacting revenge for a long-ago crime. He was retraining to his normal routine, but wasn’t at full strength yet.
“I’ll concede it’s cold, but if you’d wear a hat, your body would stay warmer.”
“And mess up my hair.” He flicked a purple dreadlock while a dimpled grin lit his face.
“You keep smilin’ like that and your face is gonna freeze,” she teased.
He rubbed his cheeks with gloved hands. “It’s already frozen.”
A gasp behind her made her half turn. Before she could complete the move she was seized from behind. A hood slammed over her head as she was lifted off her feet.
Grunts and scuffling beside her let her know Matt was receiving the same treatment.
Her attacker was large and strong. She wiggled, throwing her head back, hoping to smash a nose or anything in her assailant’s face.
Contact.
The arms holding her loosened enough for her to free one arm. She balled a fist and slammed it into her attacker’s crotch.
He dropped her to the ground. She landed in a heap, quickly recovered and swept her attacker’s legs out from beneath him. She snatched off the hood, ready to help Matt.
Matt had his attacker face-down on the pavement, a knee firmly in his back.
“Sam is down,” Nathalie managed between gasps.
“Did you wear a cup?” Carson demanded from his position on the ground. Once Matt stood, he rolled over and grasped the hand Matt held out. He walked to where Sam lay in the fetal position. “I told you to wear a cup.”
“I thought you were joking,” Sam choked out.
“Sam, I’m sorry,” Nathalie said.
“Not as sorry as I am,” he returned in a falsetto.
They chuckled. “I think she’s gotten all of us like that a time or two,” Matt assured him. He leaned down, arm outstretched. “Think you can stand?”
“You guys are always telling me to not hold my punches when we do these drills,” Nathalie defended, as Sam laboriously got to his feet.
Matt helped Sam extricate himself from the padded suit used to absorb blows.
Sam flashed her a wan smile. “I’ll put a little ice on it and be good as new in no time,” he assured her. “You’ll have to show me that head butt.”
She nodded.
“And what if he’d attacked you with a weapon?” Carson demanded.
“I’d have disarmed him,” she retorted. “I was turning to help Matt. . . .”
“If Matt what?” Carson prompted.
The amusement which lit Nathalie’s face a moment ago drained to pure terror. Her eyes widened and a little squeak came from her lips.
However, when one of the missing women turns up dead, the trio is disturbed to learn the woman bore a striking resemblance to Nathalie; they increase their efforts. When Nathalie disappears from the same bar, Carson and Matt will do anything to find her.
