Pampered princess and daughter of a drug lord, Isabel Ramirez, is on her way to grabbing the brass ring in the legitimate world of academia when her boss gets in the way. Isabel’s take no prisoners approach ensures the department chair will never expose her deceptions.
Graduate assistant and guy-on-the-side, Sean Richards wants Isabel to leave her sleazy husband. He’s convinced he can bring out the better woman beneath that tough sex siren exterior. He will do anything for his voracious lover—except commit murder.
As a nosy colleague follows a trail of clues that lead to her door, Isabel is forced to make a choice. Will she kill her friend to stay out of jail? Or will she redeem herself and become the extraordinary woman she sees in Sean’s loving eyes?
The Mexican national anthem blared from a red telephone.
She moaned. “Not now.”
“You’d better grab the damn thing before it gets to the next verse.” He stepped away from her. “You know how your father is.”
Isabel stomped to the phone. “He has the worst timing!” She snatched the phone off the hook. “Hola, Papa,” she said in her sweetest little girl voice.
“Hola Chiquita!” Carlos Rios’ voice boomed out of the phone, audible to all in a fifty-foot range.
“Papa, I can hear you fine. You don’t have to shout,” she said in English.
“I saw the news about your boss. You can become the Chairman now!”
She glanced at Tomas and rolled her eyes. “I’m not even a full professor yet, Papa. The University won’t think I’m qualified for her job.”
His voice swelled with pride. “My baby girl, all grown up and a professor.”
Isabel cringed and wished he wouldn’t do this every time he called. She knew he’d had a hard life and had become a powerful man by using his wits, and fists, but this was getting tiresome.
“Me, I’m so bad, I have to call you on a secure phone line, so the federales can’t hear us. But you, you’re the first in our family to go to college. The first to get a real job. You’re legit.”
“Papa…”
He gave a little sob. “You make me so proud!”
She sighed. “Thank you, Papa.”
His voice became all business. “Apply for her job. Maybe you’ll get extra points for being Mexican.”
He’d never understand the world of academics, no matter how she tried to explain. In his world, you wanted something, you took it. She had to play by the rules‒okay, maybe she bent them sometimes‒to get what she wanted. “Si, Papa.”
“Hold on. Your Mama wants to talk with you.”
Girding herself for her mother’s interminable droning about her grandchildren, Isabel motioned to Tomas to get her a drink. She’d need a stiff one to get through this.
