When June’s boss promised her the promotion of her dreams, she knew she would have to endure a few sleepless nights. She didn’t know it would strain her relationship with her girlfriend or lead to disturbing nightmares. She was focused on her career... until her nightmares came to life and forced her to acknowledge her deeper calling.
But when Kida steps out of the world in her dreams to protect and guide her, June must choose between the safe path she’s on or the dangerous power of her higher purpose. June’s words prophesy violent battles and a war for the throne that shapes their future and alters ours. But wars have casualties in both worlds, and as her family’s connection to Kida deepens, finishing her story may prove difficult. And tragic.
The Scribe of Shadows is a suspenseful and sexy Urban Fantasy that will keep you up all night.
The Scribe of Shadows is unlike anything I’ve written before. It’s part Urban Fantasy, part Paranormal Romance, and all heart. At the center of the story is June, who has spent a lifetime trying not to take up space and pleasing others. She’s the polar opposite of her brother, who is a laid-back artist, and it was fun to explore their sibling dynamic.
When a Warrior named Kida from another land wreaks havoc on June’s quiet life, it forces her to take a harder look at the choices she makes and the life she’s living. She’s convinced herself that she wants this job that has stunted her creatively, and she’s ignoring her deeper desires and talent. Kida is savage, in the best ways possible, and she is someone who didn’t grow up with that “this is what society expects” view. It puts her in conflict with June, but it also allows for a blunt level of honesty she might not have gotten otherwise. But as they get to know each other, they discover how much they have in common, and it creates a bond that I think makes them both stronger.
Finally, The Scribe explores two romances, one that is building while another is falling apart. The dynamic that creates between our four heroes gave me an opportunity to play around with humor and awkward tension while they are working toward these other big goals. The rest of our life doesn’t stop when we are facing a major challenge, we still go to work and have responsibilities, and it was fun to put them all in this hugely stressful world without taking any of that away.
My goal with The Scribe was to create a book that explored relationships, romance, everyday choices, and real life as well as making you laugh, cry, and get excited.
Ashlynn licked and nipped at the base of her throat then planted soft kisses across her chest. Her hands slid from June’s waist to her rear, giving her a tight squeeze and the gentlest of slaps.
“Call me your warrior again,” she said against June’s nightgown, her breath creating heat and moisture.
June put her knees on the bed, crawling up to meet Ashlynn. “Make me.”
From a young age, Jen was an avid reader who quickly graduated from Beverly Cleary to Judy Blume to stealing Nora Roberts and Mary Higgins Clark books from her mother's bookshelves. It created a longstanding passion for adding mystery, power, and real-life struggles to a steamy romance.
When she's not writing, Jen enjoys walking at the park, taking yoga classes, and swinging Kettlebells around the city (although not literally... there are too many ducks and really old Oak trees). She loves chats at coffee shops with a good friend and insists on having a family fun day at home once a week. Those days are for couch time, completing puzzles, or playing video games with her husband and two kids.
Jen and her family, plus a variety of furry critters (and the occasional frog), live in New Orleans, a city so close to her heart it features prominently in her books.
