Featured Jewel – Glynnis Campbell
If I’ve discovered anything on the road to becoming a published author, it’s that finding a happy-ever-after ending requires a strong suit of armor!
Two decades ago, when I didn’t know anything about word counts or story structure, I wrote my first novel—an unmarketable mega-saga of over 1,000 pages. An author wiser than me suggested I split it into three books, and for a year, I sent the first book to all the big New York publishers. Time after time, I was turned down. After each joust with rejection, I’d lie stunned in the dust for a few days, then suit up in my chainmail again and send out another letter. I collected dozens of rejections.
Most writers would have taken the hint at this point. But I was blessedly naΓ―ve and more than a little stubborn. So I started pitching myself to agents, thinking representation might help me succeed.
After a total of 37 rejections from agents and publishers—yes, I saved all the letters—one agent finally showed interest. Though she was interested in contemporary, not historical romance, she said she’d like to meet with me at the upcoming Romance Writers of America conference. I somehow ended up nervously pitching my book to her, seated on a sofa next to historical romance icon Heather Graham!
A week later, I got the call—she wanted to be my agent. Two weeks after that, she sold my first three books! (Those books ended up being The Knights of de Wareseries—MY CHAMPION, MY WARRIOR, and MY HERO.) We embarked on a decade-long journey through 10 books, two publishers, and three pen names.
But that’s not the dramatic, strap on your full armor, here comes the big battle scene part of the story.
On the day I turned 50, my agent called to inform me that my last contract was officially fulfilled. She couldn’t do anything more for me. No one wanted my books. My career was over. Happy birthday.
Devastated by the news—not to mention turning 50—I gave up writing. For half a year.
Then something curious happened. I saw a new format was starting to take off—ebooks. An author could publish books on her own. Her stories could find new audiences, and the books would stay on store shelves forever. Best of all, instead of authors earning 7% off each book, it was 70%! And since publishers at that time didn’t expect ebooks to succeed, I got the rights to my backlist books, no questions asked.
It turned out to be the best birthday gift ever! And I owe my happy-ever-after ending to a sturdy, resilient, and long-lasting suit of armor.
