Abby Tyler welcomes you to the witty, well-meaning busybodies of Applebottom, Missouri, where the community takes its pies -- and its matchmaking -- very seriously.
Lorelei Spencer is over that loser who wasted the last few years of her life, and she’s going to prove it.
After she's had enough mourning and midnight rage-crying, Lorelei dumps all the clothes, stuffed animals, notes, and mementos from the relationship on her front lawn. Then, she sets the pile ablaze.
It feels great.
Until it catches the grass on fire, too.
Volunteer firefighter Micah Livingston arrives on the scene and handily douses the blaze. But the fire he puts out sparks a new one in his heart when he realizes this feisty woman with a zeal for life might be exactly what he's been looking for.
A couple of the sodden pages had hearts all over them. Micah caught sight of the words love, forever, and sweetheart. He was starting to get a picture of what happened here. A relationship had ended, and Lorelei wanted to set fire to all the evidence.
The small crowd that had gathered scooted in closer, also curious about what had started the whole thing.
Micah cleared his throat. "We have this under control. Everybody can go on back now. We'll get it cleaned up."
Lorelei sank to her knees in the mud, gathering up any of the pages that were still legible. Micah turned to Fred. "I'm gonna stay here and help her get this picked up," he said. "You can take the truck on back. We’re good."
Fred looked between the two of them for a moment and gave him an exaggerated wink. "I'll have the boys clear everybody out," he said.
Lorelei looked ridiculously cute, a smudge on her nose, the papers clutched in her arms.
He shifted a little closer. “We can take this directly out to the dump, if you're worried the neighbors might get nosy in the trash bin."
Her eyes teared over. Micah wondered if this was a pretty recent breakup. That would explain all the crazy emotions and acting without thought.
Micah totally understood.
