Corey swore off love when his wife Annie died from breast cancer. Caitlyn is too young, too citified, and vibrates with a passion and energy that will upend the safe, comfortable rhythm of his life. Corey has to choose between playing it safe and taking a risk on love. Caitlyn needs to find the patience to let Corey lead. If not, the Maple Sugar Ball might end in a sticky mess, instead of a slow dance with the man who has captured her heart.
Will their fire burn hot enough to erase doubts and past hurts?
When I was creating the storyline behind Lion Dancing for Love, I wanted to play with the notion that people who looked at first sight like opposites on the outside could actually be perfectly aligned on the inside. My heroine Caitlin is from San Diego and has a Chinese-American mum while my hero Corey is at least a fourth generation Willow Springs, Vermont man. He’s also ten years older than Caitlin is. He’s been married and widowed. She’s still waiting for a ring on her finger. What they have in common, however, is more important. They have both been burned by love, and they both have caring, if nosey, family.
- I had to do some research on Vermont in order to set the scene, and here are ten fun facts I wasn’t aware of:
- Despite its New England location, Vermont was founded by the French. The origin of the word Vermont is likely the French phrase Les Monts Verts meaning the green mountains.
- Before joining the Union in 1791, Vermont had its own currency and postal service.
- Vermont is ranked the safest state in America as well as the second least populated. If you’re looking for some quiet R&R, it is the place to go.
- Vermont leads the nation in the production of talc, monument granite, marble and maple products – hence the annual Maple Sugar Ball in Willow Springs!
- In April 2009, Vermont became the fourth state to legalize gay marriage. Prior to this, Vermont was the first state to legalize same-sex civil unions.
- President Calvin Coolidge was born in Vermont on the 4th July.
- Montpelier is the only state capital that does not have a MacDonald’s.
- Ben & Jerry's Ice Cream company gives their ice cream waste to local Vermont farmers who use it to feed their hogs. The hogs seem to like all of the flavors except Mint Oreo.
- Vermont does not sell alcohol to out-of-state licenses. You must have a liquor ID in order to purchase alcohol at liquor stores and grocery stores. Fortunately for those in the tourist trade, bars can serve travelers without a liquor ID.
- English author Rudyard Kipling (The Jungle Book) lived in Vermont in the 1890s and invented the game of snow golf – I guess it was a long, snowy winter!
She walked across to Corey, tucking her hair behind her right ear, unexpectedly shy at his acknowledgement. She squared her shoulders. “Hi.”
“Hey.” He stood and pulled out a chair for her, a half-smile playing on his lips. “You and I can’t avoid each other.”
She shrugged. “It’s a small town. Although you’ve looked awfully busy.” Too busy to say hello was her unspoken message. She’d let him know she was interested, and he had ignored her ever since.
“Yeah.”
Her drink arrived, and they fell silent while the waitress fussed with a coaster and peanuts.
He rubbed his hand against his chin and gazed directly into her eyes. “I’ve been a bit preoccupied, mostly with you.”
“Me?” She choked on a swig of champagne and coughed as the bubbles went down the wrong way.
He grabbed her glass and set it down before patting her on the back.
“I’m fine,” she gasped.
“Sorry. I take it that was my fault for surprising the heck out of you.”
“Yep.”
“Why? You’re the one who kissed me.”
And why wouldn’t she when he looked so delectable? She was tempted to kiss him again, rub out the mischievous twitch to his lips. Instead she retorted, “And you’re the one who
didn’t kiss me back.”
