From Novella 1: Christmas Chaos
I pull her into my arms, reveling in the feel of her soft curves pressed against my chest, and rest my chin atop her blonde head. She buries her face into my sweatshirt.
âHennessy, honey, you need to stop worrying about all the little details. Weâve come this far and, with the help of a whole lotta people, weâre going to have a beautiful wedding. With or without heat. With or without light. As long as youâre there with me, up at the altar, then nothing else matters,â I murmur into her hair.
She looks up at me with pale blue eyes, brows arched in concern.
âBryan, I donât consider heat and light âlittle details.â And the roadsâtheyâre like ice! How will anyone get here safely? How will we get here safely?â
I sigh and brush the hair back off her forehead.
âDo you have any idea how much I love you?â I ask. âAnd thatâs not a rhetorical question.â
âI think I have some idea,â she replies, the corners of her mouth quirking up a little.
I shake my head.
âNo, I donât think you do. I wanted this wedding to happen fast because I couldnât wait another day to be married to you. Donât you see? It doesnât matterânone of it matters. In the end, itâs just you and me taking a vow before God. Itâs not the wedding, Hennessy. Itâs the marriage.â
Her eyes study mine for a long moment before she puts a soft hand to my cheek.
âIâll try to stay calm,â she assures me. âAnd I do know how much you love meâŠbecause thatâs how much I love you, too.â
I lean down, my lips finding hers. Itâs a beautiful, candlelit moment. Until itâs not.
âNoooooooooo, Mama! Miiiiiiiiiiine!â
Our kiss transforms into a double-sided snort of laughter. We pull away from one another, chuckling. When she opens her mouth to say something, I hold up my index finger to stop her.
âAnd before you worry about Jax being too young, or too unpredictable, heâs a little detail, too. An incredibly loud, incredibly destructive detailâŠbut a little one, nonetheless.â
âYeah, well, maybe we should reconsider letting him be the ring bearer,â she says.
âWhy? You donât think he can handle it?â
âUh, well, you know the plastic bottle cap ring weâre using for practice?â
âYeahâŠâ I nod, wondering where sheâs going with this.
âHe just swallowed it.â
