He awakens encapsulated in dirt with no knowledge of how he came to be there. Riddled with injuries, he can remember neither his past nor who he is. Nor can he remember what he is. But surely no mortal man could survive being buried deep beneath the earth. All he knows with certainty is that the soothing voice and presence of the woman moving around above enables him to endure the agony of his wounds. And he will do whatever it takes to be with her.
When Susan first sees the old two-story house for sale, such warmth and longing fill her that—against all reason—she makes an offer. It will take years of hard work and money she frankly doesn’t have to fix up the place. So she can’t explain why she bought it. She also can’t explain what compels her to spend hours one night, digging in the basement until she unearths a man. A man who still lives and breathes despite having been buried alive. A man whose intense brown eyes glow amber with pain, declaring him far more than ordinary. Susan knows she should keep her distance. He has no memory and possesses gifts that would make most fear him. But as the two work together to unravel the mystery of his past, she finds herself drawn in by his teasing nature and tender touch. So much so that she loses her heart to him even as they find themselves hunted by unknown enemies who are ruthless in their quest to capture them.
Top 5 Reasons to Love Susan
Hello! Thank you so much for joining me. I’m very happy to be here, celebrating the release of AWAKEN THE DARKNESS, the eighth book in my Immortal Guardians series. (If you’re new to the series, don’t worry. The books can be read as stand alones. You’ll just be more familiar with the secondary characters if you read them in order.) Today I thought I would help you get to know Susan, the heroine, by giving you five reasons Stanislav falls in love with her.
1
She has a great sense of humor.
If he doesn’t get here soon, I’m going to fall asleep, Susan grumbled.
He loved hearing her voice in his head even when she was cranky.
The thought made him smile. I’ve been keeping you up too late.
Not really, she replied. I’ve always been a night owl. I just haven’t been sleeping late the way I usually do.
And had had one scare after another whilst awake.
Did I mention I’m still sore from digging your handsome ass up?
He laughed.
It was totally worth it, of course, she went on. But if we find out you’re single, I might hit you up for a nice long massage.
He cursed when his body immediately responded to the image of her naked and laid out before him, waiting for him to run his hands all over her body. Now who’s flirting?
Ooh, she purred. That’s so cool. Even in your thoughts, your voice deepens and gets all growly when you’re turned on. Before he could respond, she made a sound of impatience. Damn it. Now I’m turned on.
He laughed, delighted that she inspired him to do so even in such grim circumstances.
2
She’s honest.
Taking a step forward, she held her arms out to him. “Come here.”
She didn’t have to ask him twice. Closing the distance between them, he wrapped his strong arms around her and squeezed her close, lifting her feet off the floor.
Susan slid her arms around his neck and held on tight.
“Please don’t fear me,” he uttered hoarsely, burying his face in her neck.
“I’ll try,” she promised, unwilling to lie and say she wouldn’t. She doubted this would be the last thing about him that would freak her out. “Just give me time to adjust, okay? Some of the things you can do may startle me, but—”
“I would never hurt you, Susan. I vow it.”
She tightened her hold. “I know.” Resting her head on his shoulder, she sighed. “I’m sorry I hurt you.”
He shook his head. Several long moments passed while both calmed and just held each other.
3
She has the same insecurities so many of us do.
She studied herself in the mirror.
Stanislav thought she was pretty. Beautiful, actually. She had found as much in his thoughts. But as she stared at her reflection, she really didn’t see it. The best thing she could say about herself was that she looked younger than she was. She always had. And she’d hated that when she was in high school. The other girls had teased her mercilessly, repeatedly pointing out that they all looked like women while she still looked like a girl. But it had ended up working in her favor. At thirty-two, she could easily pass for twenty-one.
Why the hell am I thinking about that now?
Because you want to look good for Stanislav.
She wrinkled her nose at her reflection. So much for that idea.
4
She’s brave and doesn’t back down from a fight.
Grabbing one of the 9mms, Stanislav held it out to Susan. “Here.”
She moved forward and took it without hesitation. “Thanks. No way in hell am I going to let those bastards get their hands on you.”
Both men stilled and looked at her.
Stanislav’s blood heated at the protective and proprietary emotions she exuded.
She glanced up from the weapon and caught them staring. “What?”
Alexei met Stanislav’s gaze. “I like her.”
He smiled. “I like her more.”
5
But she can still be flustered.
How long had he been buried there? She glanced down his long length. And how had he remained so well preserved? As though he had just lain down and breathed his last breath five minutes ago?
She returned her attention to his face, drew her fingers across his forehead, carefully avoiding the jagged line carved into it.
His skin was gritty from the dirt. Cool to the touch.
She shook her head. “What did they do to you?” she whispered again.
One of his eyelids lifted.
She sucked in a breath.
His brown eye blinked, then focused on her.
Amber light flashed in it.
The fear that she should have been feeling all this time now struck with a vengeance.
Her heart doing its damnedest to burst from her chest, she yanked her fingers back and tried to scoot away.
His hand shot out and clamped around her wrist, preventing her from withdrawing.
“Oh sh**!” she cried, struggling to free herself from his hold while Jax began to bark.
I hope you’ll enjoy Susan and Stanislav’s story! ☺
