These people are called the Estranged, hunted and shunned, safe only on the Island of Exile. It is here that Kaeva and Eddie meet—and where they set a prophecy in motion, quite possibly sealing their own demise, and even the end of Exile.
Notes: contains some explicit content and includes thoughts and discussions of past and potential suicide
Kelly Wyre: Oh Etienne… I love Etienne! If for no other reason than his name is a tribute to my masochism! (Etee… Et… Et tu Brute?)
AF Henley: Wow. See, this I did not know.
KW: Which?
AFH: The whole tribute to your masochism thing. I mean, they usually ARE there, but...
KW: Oh, come on. The entire novel and all its names are a tribute to my pronunciation masochism. Not to mention my spelling masochism. I mean… Kaeva? Really? Seriously, guys, try typing that at speed correctly more than once.
AFH: Experts advice--shortcut link to anytime you type "KA"
KW: But my epic poem, “An Ode to Kale” would never be the same!
AFH: An ode to… what—you know, I don't even know. So, Etienne?
KW: Oh, and speaking of kale…. Etienne loves to eat! Has to. A lot. All the time, even. Because it feeds - hah - his Estrangement, which allows him to basically know every language on earth. Never forgets. Oh Etienne… I love thee...
AFH: Seriously. That would get me more wound up than pretty much any of the other Estrangements. Serenade me in German, you great man!
KW: “Gleich um die Ecke, mein Lieeeeeeeb!”

A few people nodded, but no one spoke or offered kind words as the Council assembled in their chairs. Collins was there representing Tech and transportation. Mecken was likely around, probably pissed that he wasn't allowed inside. Collins was a big man, heavily muscled, with short brown hair and an aloof expression. Mithra, tall, dark, and dangerous in her handmade leathers, stood by herself, people giving her nearly as wide a berth as Kaeva. Her shorn head was covered in intricate black tattoos, and the metal in her nose flashed silver when she smiled. Shin stood with Zunella and his lieutenants of Patrol. Shin had been military and in his fifties when he'd been given the Cure. It'd given him super stamina. He rarely ever needed to sleep, going for weeks on end if necessary. The result left him hyperactive and twitchy, however; constantly in motion. He was some sort of mixed Asian stock, with black hair and eyes. Slender, short Marykeen and her husband Aman were there representing the Growers and the Food and Resources department.
And then, of course, there was the Council. The group was always an interesting mixture of the powerful and the popular, each member representing a portion of the island. Oberon and Lake were there, seated side-by-side at the peak of the half-circle of chairs. The tall blond man who had been speaking to Oberon now sat next to him. That was Krue, who could see spirits and energy and, if the rumors were true, darker, nastier things as well. Etienne sat next to Lake and was all smiles, as usual. He was pleasantly round about the middle with rosy cheeks and auburn hair. He spoke something like eight languages, which was impressive enough without his Estrangement. Etienne could remember everything. When Kaeva had asked him how such an Estrangement didn't drive him crazy, Etienne had said in his clear, crisp voice, "Oh, I just focus on the good stuff." The fuel his brain needed kept Etienne eating almost as much as a Swift, and while Kaeva watched, Etienne unwrapped food and absently began to inhale it.

I was challenged to write Kaeva's name at speed multiple times, and I've done it. :D It was kind of fun, the first 15 times I would end up pausing after "ka" just to force my fingers to hit the "e" next. It seemed so against their natural way of doing things. 45 times later, Kaeva is as natural to my hands as...other....activities.
ReplyDeleteMy fingers took to Etienne easily by comparison. It's one of those names I can't pronounce, but once you've seen it you can write it.
I can speak from experience, inhaling is a bad way to eat food Etienne.
What a wonderfully full teaser with everyone described. :D This was cool. Thanks for sharing.
Excellent! Now I know who I can go to if I need a typist. ;)
DeleteGlad you enjoyed it, Frosty! Thank *you* for stopping in to read and comment. Good luck! <3
*grins*
❤️

Had to concentrate on finishing this one that's why I'm late. Hate that I'm a slow reader. :|
DeleteAnyway, this scene is where we got to get a read of everyone in Exile (or at least the people who run the island). And I admit that Eddie is right; that everyone possess superiority complex. I love Lundrell, Mecken & Kaeva, tho. They're the lovable characters in this story. Of course, Eddie would be the number one who you'll be rooting for. And this scene was written effectively because Eddie's frustrations flow through me and I felt like I was in his place being examined under a microscope. I was equally terrified & I felt like I'll piss on my pants. And wasn't that accurate? *winks*
Thanks for coming by to Romance Novel Giveaways, Kel & Henley! <3
