Matrix, King of the crossroads, the Devil’s right hand man for the last twenty years, is willing to make the deal, eager for another pawn. To sweeten the exchange he gives her one year to mourn her decision before he takes her for good.
In that year he's determined to torment her, driven by envy at the strength in her soul. Though having lived years apart, the same heartless man, Manx Sloazan, destroyed their lives.
With her remaining life, Elise must teach her sister to live without her and find the courage to say goodbye. It won't be easy. Sloazan is determined to make Elise pay for a bungled drug sale and Matrix wants to torture her soul. Or does he?
With Elise, Matrix has discovered something he thought he'd lost. His heart. But he is the devil's, without the ability to choose. When the time comes, will he be prepared to let her go in order to save her soul? Or will the Devil make sure he gets what is his due?
I waited for him on the steps outside Em’s apartment. Previously he’d come for me in the morning. He would come again. Was it with anticipation that I sat here? I couldn’t pigeonhole the sensations in my stomach. Not one sensation but a range blended together, making it hard to define their meaning: anxiety, perhaps, mixed with excitement and something else much deeper. How could I be excited about meeting with a demon? Maybe because he electrified my senses. He was slowly drowning me in his allure, but I was a fighter by nature and when fighters are faced with demise, their survival skills are amped.
He gave me a choice. Being with him was like being pushed to the edge of the ledge with nothing but torment below. But always he stood just one step to the side, giving me the avenue of escape. The irony is, once lived through, pain has a certain exhilaration. Smothering it brings a continual road of despair, but having the grimy bits pulled out, while messy, lightens the load. My mother hung on my shoulders, my sister hung in my heart and Matrix gave me the power to support both in my soul. Whether it was his intention, I didn’t care. It was happening and I needed more.
I sat on the steps in the cold, determined to meet him. Because we had this freaky psychic link, he would know I was here. If he didn’t show it was because he decided to punish me. But I was under his skin as much as he was under mine. This I knew, freaky link or not. So he would show.
The clouds began to roll over, heavy gray monsters, squashing the weak sunlight. They tumbled forward, one over another like dirty white water surfing in. The wind rushed out in front, barreling down the street, catching anything loose and taking it for the ride. I wrapped my jacket tighter around my waist and huddled forward over my knees, trying to reduce the amount of me exposed to the chill.
